Women Entrepreneurs in Uttar Pradesh Drive Rural Economic Transformation
Women-led enterprises are emerging as a significant driver of rural economic growth in Uttar Pradesh, with five group companies collectively crossing ₹5,700 crore in business, highlighting the expanding role of women entrepreneurs in the state’s rural economy.
The enterprise network, developed under the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) and its Ajivika Mission, has expanded its presence to 6,603 villages across 31 districts. The initiative is enabling rural women to move beyond traditional livelihood activities and participate more actively in enterprise development, employment generation and local economic growth.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government has placed emphasis on strengthening rural livelihoods, promoting women-led enterprises and creating employment opportunities closer to people’s homes. The expansion of women-led businesses is being positioned as an important component of this broader rural development strategy.
The growth of five women-led group companies demonstrates how collective enterprise models can create sustainable economic opportunities at the grassroots level. These enterprises provide rural women with avenues to participate in production, marketing, financial management and business operations, thereby strengthening household and community-level incomes.
The growing network also aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s broader ambition of contributing to the One Trillion Dollar Economy. By integrating rural women into formal and organised economic activities, the Ajivika Mission is helping build a wider base of entrepreneurs and local enterprises across the state.
The initiative also reflects a shift in the approach to women’s empowerment—from welfare-oriented interventions towards economic participation, entrepreneurship and financial independence. Women’s Self-Help Groups and their associated enterprises are increasingly becoming platforms for skill development, market access and business expansion.
With the enterprise network reaching thousands of villages, women entrepreneurs are becoming important stakeholders in Uttar Pradesh’s rural economic transformation. The emergence of five companies with a combined business volume exceeding ₹5,700 crore underscores the potential of women-led enterprises to contribute to employment generation, livelihood diversification and inclusive growth.
The expansion of such initiatives could further strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s rural economy by connecting women entrepreneurs with markets, technology, finance and value chains, while supporting the state’s long-term development objectives.
