Shilp Samagam Mela 2026: 75 Artisans Showcase Traditional Crafts as Government Pushes Inclusive Livelihoods
The Shilp Samagam Mela 2026 in Guwahati is strengthening market access for traditional artisans with 75 participants including 31 women, showcasing approximately 40 varieties of handloom and handicraft products. Organised by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the eight-day exhibition is being held at Farm Gate Khanapara from October 21 to 28, 2026.
The exhibition brings together artisans from the Northeast and other parts of India, creating opportunities to display products, engage directly with consumers and generate income through sales. It also highlights indigenous craftsmanship and traditional knowledge while encouraging wider public appreciation of India’s cultural diversity.
Inclusive Livelihoods and Market Access
The initiative focuses on artisans and beneficiaries belonging to Scheduled Castes (SCs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Safai Mitras and Denotified Tribes (DNTs). It supports beneficiaries associated with three national corporations: the National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC), the National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation (NSKFDC) and the National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation (NBCFDC).
A key focus is BHARAT-TULIP (Traditional Artisans’ Upliftment Livelihood Programme) which seeks to connect artisans with physical retail outlets and e-commerce platforms. Such market linkages can help producers expand their customer base, strengthen entrepreneurial capabilities and reduce dependence on intermediaries.
Governance Impact
The Guwahati edition demonstrates how targeted market-promotion initiatives can connect social inclusion with economic opportunity. By improving product visibility and enabling direct sales, the programme seeks to support sustainable livelihoods while preserving traditional skills.
Policy Outlook
The long-term impact will depend on whether exhibition-based exposure translates into repeat orders, digital sales and sustained buyer relationships. Tracking artisan earnings, market expansion and post-event business growth would help assess outcomes and strengthen future editions of the programme.
