Cabinet Approves Four-Laning of NH-22 Muzaffarpur–Sitamarhi–Sonbarsa Section in Bihar
The Union Cabinet has approved the upgradation of the Muzaffarpur–Sitamarhi–Sonbarsa section of National Highway-22 (NH-22) in Bihar to four-lane standards. The project will be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), with a total capital cost of ₹3,590.73 crore.
The infrastructure initiative is aimed at strengthening road connectivity across northern Bihar and improving the movement of people, agricultural produce, commercial goods and essential services. The four-laning of the highway is expected to enhance transportation efficiency and provide safer and more reliable connectivity along an important regional corridor.
The project will also support better connectivity between Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi and Sonbarsa, improving access to key economic and administrative centres. Enhanced road infrastructure can contribute to regional economic activity by reducing travel time, improving logistics efficiency and facilitating smoother movement of goods and services.
Implementation through the Hybrid Annuity Mode is intended to combine public investment with private-sector participation in project development and execution. This model can support efficient project delivery while ensuring structured government oversight and long-term infrastructure development.
The approval reflects the government’s broader focus on expanding and modernising national highway infrastructure, strengthening regional connectivity and supporting balanced economic development. The NH-22 upgrade is expected to create a more efficient transport network and contribute to improved mobility and economic opportunities in Bihar.
