Cultural Heritage Governance: PM Mementos Brings Sikkim’s Buddhist Legacy Closer to Citizens
The eighth edition of the PM Mementos e-Auction is placing Sikkim’s distinctive cultural and spiritual heritage on a national platform, giving citizens an opportunity to connect with traditional art forms through historically significant artefacts. The initiative reflects the government’s broader approach of using public participation to strengthen awareness of India’s diverse cultural traditions.
Two notable Sikkimese artefacts are part of the current auction. One is a finely crafted brass sculpture of Lord Buddha, gifted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the Governor of Sikkim. The second is a Tibetan Buddhist tabletop prayer wheel or Mani Khorlo, featuring the sacred “Om Mani Padme Hum” mantra. Together the artefacts represent the artistic craftsmanship and Buddhist spiritual traditions deeply associated with Sikkim’s Himalayan cultural identity.
The inclusion of these artefacts is significant from a cultural governance perspective because it moves regional heritage beyond geographical boundaries and gives it wider national visibility. By making such objects accessible through a transparent e-auction mechanism, PM Mementos creates a direct connection between citizens, collectors and India’s cultural heritage.
The eighth edition features 1,498 mementos representing India’s diverse art, craft, cultural and spiritual traditions. The auction has also been extended until 31 October 2026, while proceeds will support the Namami Gange programme, linking cultural participation with a national environmental objective.
