India is positioning water security as a critical governance priority as the 9th India International Water Week (IIWW) 2026 brings policymakers, global water leaders, researchers, industry representatives, innovators and development stakeholders together at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti from September 22 to 26, the event is centred on the theme “Climate Resilient Water Management.”

The 2026 edition marks the evolution of India Water Week into India International Water Week, reflecting a stronger international cooperation framework around shared water challenges. The Netherlands and Germany are participating as partner countries, while 14 Indian states and central ministries are contributing to the wider policy dialogue.

The conference is structured around seven governance-oriented sub-themes covering inclusive water governance, optimal utilisation of resources, technology and community participation, climate-related risks, innovative financing, sustainable resource management and water for people and the planet. Ten major forums are facilitating discussions across policy, technology, implementation and innovation.

A major focus is the integration of technology, financing and community participation into water-sector planning. The international exhibition and technology showcase is providing a platform for solutions aimed at sustainable and climate-resilient water management. The Second International WASH Conference has also focused on drinking water, sanitation, hygiene and public health.

The governance significance of IIWW 2026 lies in moving water management beyond fragmented interventions towards integrated, outcome-oriented planning. Climate variability, urbanisation and rising resource pressures require stronger coordination between groundwater management, rainwater harvesting, irrigation, river-basin planning and urban water systems.

The event is therefore serving as a platform to convert global knowledge and technological innovation into implementable partnerships, financing models and scalable solutions, strengthening India’s broader water-security architecture.
