Bhadohi Carpet Cluster Gets Global Push as UP Expands Artisan-Led Export Economy
Uttar Pradesh is positioning its traditional artisan clusters as engines of exports, employment and regional economic growth with Bhadohi emerging as a key example of the state’s shift from informal handicraft activity to organised, technology-enabled manufacturing and global market integration.
Addressing the India Carpet Expo in Bhadohi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the transformation of Uttar Pradesh’s business environment and the growing opportunities for artisans. He said the carpet sector has benefited from improved technology, design capabilities, market access, connectivity and security. Under the One District One Product (ODOP) framework, Bhadohi’s carpet artisans are being connected with wider markets while retaining the district’s traditional manufacturing identity.
The scale of the cluster underlines its economic significance. Sant Ravidas Nagar has around 2,500 MSME units with an annual turnover of nearly ₹10,000 crore, while the industry provides direct employment to more than five lakh people. Around 90% of carpets manufactured in the district are exported with major markets including the United States, Germany, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The India Carpet Expo itself reflects the sector’s expanding global footprint with around 250 exhibitors and more than 450 foreign buyers from 65 countries. The participation of 106 buyers from BRICS countries further strengthens export diversification prospects.
The government is also linking the carpet ecosystem with broader textile infrastructure. A PM MITRA Textile Park is being developed across 1,000 acres between Lucknow and Hardoi while the proposed Varanasi-Vindhya Regional Development Plan is expected to strengthen the textile and silk clusters of Sant Ravidas Nagar, Mirzapur and Varanasi.
The broader governance shift is significant: traditional craftsmanship is increasingly being integrated with MSME formalisation, export promotion, infrastructure and regional planning, creating a stronger platform for Uttar Pradesh’s artisan economy.
