IAF Plans ₹10,000 Crore Acquisition of 24 VVIP Helicopters to Strengthen Secure Air Transport
The Indian Air Force plans to acquire 24 Special Utility Helicopters dedicated to transporting Very Very Important Persons including the President, Vice President and Prime Minister. The Defence Acquisition Council chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the proposal on October 26, 2026 as part of a broader defence acquisition package worth approximately ₹2.12 lakh crore. The proposed helicopter procurement is estimated to cost around ₹10,000 crore. However the approval represents an in-principle clearance, not the award of a final procurement contract.
Strategic Modernisation of VVIP Transport
The proposed acquisition aims to replace the Mi-17 V5 helicopters currently used for VVIP transportation. These helicopters were adapted for specialised duties after the earlier VVIP helicopter procurement programme was scrapped following a controversy. The new fleet is expected to be configured around specific requirements for secure transportation, operational reliability and protection against potential threats. Airbus H225-family helicopters, including the H-725 designation reported in media coverage and a competing US-made platform have been mentioned as possible contenders. The final selection remains subject to the procurement process.
Governance and National Security Impact
Dedicated VVIP helicopters can improve flexibility in official travel, particularly for short-distance journeys and destinations where fixed-wing aircraft may be less practical. A modern fleet could also strengthen mission readiness and reduce dependence on ageing or extensively modified platforms. The acquisition is therefore significant not merely as a transport upgrade but as an investment in secure executive mobility and continuity of essential government functions.
Procurement Accountability and Policy Significance
The project also highlights the importance of transparent defence procurement, clearly defined operational requirements and robust evaluation of competing platforms. Given the estimated expenditure, cost discipline, lifecycle maintenance planning and delivery timelines will be critical to ensuring value for public money. The next stages of the acquisition process will determine the selected helicopter, final contract value and delivery schedule.
Governance Bharat Analysis
The proposed purchase reflects India’s continuing effort to modernise specialised military aviation while strengthening the security infrastructure supporting constitutional offices. Its long-term success will depend on timely execution, stringent security standards and accountable management of public expenditure.
