GRSE–DNV MoU to Advance Digital, Green and High-Tech Shipbuilding
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global maritime organisation DNV to strengthen India’s capabilities in advanced, digital and sustainable shipbuilding. The agreement was signed on September 2, 2026, during the SMM Hamburg Maritime Trade Fair in Germany.
The partnership brings together GRSE’s expertise in ship design, shipbuilding and marine engineering with DNV’s capabilities in classification, certification, technical assurance, digitalisation, sustainability and maritime advisory services. The collaboration will focus on advanced and specialised vessels, green shipping technologies, digital shipbuilding, artificial intelligence and Industry 4.0 applications.
A key objective of the MoU is to promote the adoption of modern technologies and sustainable practices across shipbuilding processes. Cooperation in skill development, training and knowledge exchange is also expected to enhance the technical capabilities of personnel and support the development of a future-ready maritime workforce.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader focus on strengthening domestic shipbuilding capacity, technological self-reliance and global competitiveness. Greater integration of digital tools, artificial intelligence and green technologies can improve efficiency, sustainability and innovation in the maritime sector.
The collaboration is expected to support GRSE in undertaking technologically sophisticated shipbuilding projects for both defence and commercial applications, while strengthening India’s position in the global maritime ecosystem. The company has stated that there is currently no financial implication ascertained from the MoU.
