RBI Appoints Suman Ray as Executive Director
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Suman Ray as Executive Director (ED) with effect from September 1, 2026, strengthening the central bank’s senior administrative and institutional leadership.
Prior to his elevation, Ray was serving as the Regional Director for Maharashtra. A career central banker with more than three decades of experience at the RBI, he has worked across several key areas, including currency management, financial inclusion, payment and settlement systems, consumer education and protection, and human resources. He has also served as Secretary to the Western Area Local Board of the RBI.
In his new role, Ray will oversee the Department of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) and the Premises Department. His responsibilities will therefore cover important institutional functions associated with depositor protection and the RBI’s administrative infrastructure.
The appointment reflects the RBI’s continued emphasis on experienced leadership for critical areas of the financial system. Ray’s extensive exposure to banking operations, financial inclusion and payment systems is expected to contribute to effective institutional coordination and regulatory administration.
From a governance perspective, the appointment reinforces the importance of professional expertise, institutional continuity and accountable financial-sector management within India’s central banking framework.
