WCL Strengthens Legal Action Against Coal Theft and Illegal Mining
Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has strengthened its enforcement mechanism against coal theft and illegal mining by empowering its security officers with significant legal powers under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 (MMDR Act).
The move is aimed at improving regulatory oversight, strengthening mine security and enabling more effective legal action against activities involving unauthorised extraction, transportation and theft of coal. The enhanced powers are expected to facilitate quicker intervention by security personnel and strengthen coordination with law-enforcement agencies.
Coal theft and illegal mining pose serious challenges to the safety, productivity and economic sustainability of mining operations. Such activities can also lead to revenue losses, operational disruptions and safety risks in and around open-cast mines.
The empowerment of WCL security officers represents an important step towards strengthening institutional mechanisms for prevention and detection of illegal mining-related activities. It is expected to improve accountability and support stricter enforcement of statutory provisions governing mineral resources.
As a major public sector coal producer, WCL plays an important role in supporting India’s energy security and coal supply chain. Stronger enforcement measures can contribute to greater transparency, operational discipline and responsible utilisation of the country’s mineral resources.
