Guterres Endorses Broader UN Security Council Representation

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has backed calls for an expansion of the UN Security Council, highlighting the need to make the global institution more representative, inclusive and aligned with today’s geopolitical realities.

Guterres emphasised that the existing structure of the Security Council does not fully reflect the changing balance of global influence. He has repeatedly supported reforms aimed at strengthening the representation of developing countries, particularly nations from Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The demand for Security Council expansion has gained momentum as several countries seek greater participation in global decision-making. Advocates argue that a more inclusive Council would improve the legitimacy of international institutions and enable broader perspectives on issues related to peace, security and development.

For India, the issue remains a significant diplomatic priority. New Delhi has consistently called for comprehensive reform of the Security Council, including permanent representation for India and greater representation for developing nations.

The reform debate also underlines the wider challenge of modernising multilateral institutions. With conflicts, economic disruptions, climate concerns and emerging security threats affecting countries across regions, supporters believe global governance mechanisms must evolve to address contemporary challenges more effectively.

Guterres’s position adds further weight to the continuing international discussion on Security Council reform. However, any expansion would require agreement among UN member states and resolution of differences over the number, status and rights of potential new members.
