UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Participate in 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is set to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026. India, which assumed the BRICS chairship on January 01 2026, will host the summit at Bharat Mandapam.
Guterres’ participation is expected to strengthen the multilateral dimension of the summit and provide an important platform for discussions on global governance, sustainable development, international cooperation and emerging global challenges. The summit will bring together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries, along with outreach invitees.
India’s theme for its 2026 BRICS chairship is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The agenda reflects the need for coordinated international action to address economic, developmental, technological and sustainability-related priorities.
The participation of the UN chief also highlights India’s role in promoting inclusive and effective multilateralism. It provides an opportunity to strengthen dialogue between BRICS countries and the wider United Nations system on issues of global importance.
The 2026 summit is particularly significant as BRICS marks its 20th anniversary. India’s leadership is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation among developing economies, supporting sustainable growth and enhancing the voice of the Global South in international decision-making.
Guterres’ presence is therefore likely to add diplomatic significance to India’s BRICS chairship and reinforce the importance of collective approaches to global challenges.
