UP Accelerates Sugarcane Modernisation Through Disease-Resistant Varieties and Mechanisation

NewsStates

Uttar Pradesh is strengthening its sugarcane sector through a technology-led strategy focused on high-yielding and disease-resistant varieties, scientific cultivation practices, quality planting material and farm mechanisation. The approach seeks to improve productivity, reduce cultivation costs and strengthen farmer incomes while making the state’s sugarcane economy more resilient to disease and climate-related stresses.

A key priority is the wider adoption of improved varieties with higher yield potential and better resistance to major diseases. The ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR), Lucknow has developed several varieties specifically suited to different agro-climatic zones of Uttar Pradesh. Recent varieties such as Ikshu-15, Ikshu-16 and Ikshu-17 are part of the continuing effort to improve varietal productivity and resilience.

The state is also moving towards scientific crop management, including improved seed systems, precision resource utilisation, better irrigation practices and integrated disease management. IISR is advancing technologies involving remote sensing, GIS, GPS, UAVs, artificial intelligence and machine learning for crop monitoring and precision agriculture.

Mechanisation is emerging as another major pillar. Sugarcane planters, ratoon-management equipment and other farm machinery can help address labour constraints and enable timely field operations. IISR has also highlighted Farm Machinery Banks as an institutional mechanism for expanding access to agricultural equipment.

The broader governance objective is to shift sugarcane cultivation from conventional input-intensive farming towards a data-driven, resource-efficient and productivity-oriented model. Wider adoption of improved varieties, quality planting material, scientific practices and mechanisation could strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of Uttar Pradesh’s sugarcane economy.
