India Enters WorldSkills Top 10, Secures Six Silver Medals in Shanghai 2026
India has achieved a significant milestone in global vocational skills by securing 10th position at the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, with the Indian contingent winning six Silver Medals and 20 Medals for Excellence. The 48th WorldSkills Competition concluded in Shanghai on September 27, bringing together around 1,400 young competitors from nearly 70 countries and regions across 64 skills.
The performance marks an improvement over India’s 13th-place finish at WorldSkills Lyon 2024, when the country won four Bronze Medals and 12 Medals for Excellence. India participated with its largest-ever contingent of 70 competitors across 63 skills, reflecting the expanding scale of the country’s skilling ecosystem.
India’s six Silver Medals came in Bakery, Dental Prosthetics, Digital Interactive Media Design, Industrial Design Technology, Logistics and Freight Forwarding, and Retail Sales. Smriti Nambiar, who won Silver in Bakery, was also recognised as India’s Best of Nation competitor.
Governance & Policy Impact
The Shanghai performance highlights a broader shift in India’s workforce strategy from conventional vocational trades towards advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, specialised services and emerging industrial skills. India also debuted in 11 new skill categories, including Unmanned Aerial Systems, Software Testing, Aircraft Maintenance, Optoelectronic Technology and Intelligent Security Technology.
The result strengthens the policy case for aligning skill training with international occupational standards, industry requirements and emerging technologies. It also provides greater global exposure for Indian skilled professionals and can support the development of a workforce capable of contributing to India’s manufacturing, services, technology and innovation ambitions.
India’s entry into the WorldSkills top 10 therefore represents not only a medal achievement but also a measurable indicator of the growing depth and diversification of its national skilling infrastructure.
