Kanpur Metro Set for IIT–Naubasta Expansion Before Diwali; Full Fleet Deployment to Cut Waiting Time
Kanpur Metro is preparing to extend passenger services from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta before Diwali 2026, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of urban public transport in Uttar Pradesh. The extension will connect northern and southern parts of the city through a 23.8-kilometre stretch under Corridor 1, strengthening connectivity for daily commuters. The proposed expansion is subject to the required approvals for passenger operations.
Seven New Stations to Expand Urban Connectivity
The extended Orange Line will have 21 stations, including seven additional stations between Kanpur Central and Naubasta: Jhakarkati Bus Terminal, Transport Nagar, Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Buddhist Nagar and Naubasta. The expansion is expected to improve access to residential neighbourhoods, commercial areas and transport hubs, particularly in southern Kanpur.
Complete Fleet Delivery to Improve Service Frequency
Alstom has completed the delivery of all 39 trainsets planned for Kanpur Metro’s two corridors. Of these, 29 are allocated to Corridor 1, connecting IIT Kanpur with Naubasta while 10 are designated for Corridor 2, linking the Agriculture University area with Barra-8. Following the expansion and deployment of additional trains, the planned service frequency on Corridor 1 is approximately one train every five minutes and six seconds, compared with the existing interval of around 13 minutes.
Governance and Economic Impact
The extension represents a shift from infrastructure construction towards expanding passenger access and improving service capacity. More frequent metro services could reduce dependence on private vehicles, ease pressure on congested road corridors and improve access to employment, education and healthcare facilities. Better connectivity between residential areas and major transport hubs could also support commercial activity and strengthen urban mobility.
For Uttar Pradesh, the project highlights the role of mass rapid transit in managing urban growth. However, the anticipated benefits will depend on timely safety clearances, reliable operations and effective integration with other public transport services. The IIT–Naubasta extension is therefore an important step towards building a more accessible and efficient transport network for Kanpur.
