India Pushes for a “Whole-of-Industry” Approach to Strengthen Electronics and Semiconductor Sector
India’s electronics and semiconductor sector is entering a major phase of expansion, with large-scale investments, growing manufacturing capacity and increasing participation from global companies.
Industry leaders are calling for stronger coordination among different industry associations to build an integrated ecosystem covering semiconductors, electronics manufacturing, components, materials, chip design, packaging and end-use applications.
The issue was discussed during a panel session titled “Role of Industry Associations in Advancing India’s National Agenda” at Semicon India 2026. The session was led by Amitesh Kumar Sinha, CEO of India Semiconductor Mission and brought together senior representatives from major industry associations.
Focus on Industry-Wide Collaboration
Industry representatives highlighted the growing interdependence between semiconductor manufacturing, packaging, testing, electronics production, materials and chip design.
They stressed the need for a “whole-of-industry” approach, allowing different industry bodies to coordinate on issues affecting multiple segments of the semiconductor and electronics value chain.
The discussion also focused on creating a more permanent mechanism for collaboration that could facilitate regular dialogue, improve coordination and support collective action on issues important to the sector.
From Silicon to Systems
Another key focus was the broader “Silicon to Systems” approach, bringing together chip design, manufacturing, packaging, electronics and technology applications.
The approach reflects India’s expanding semiconductor ambitions, which are moving beyond individual manufacturing facilities toward the development of a broader and more resilient semiconductor ecosystem.
Global Participation at Semicon India 2026
Semicon India 2026 saw participation from more than 600 exhibitors, including around 300 international companies.
The event featured 56 MoUs, strategic initiatives and industry announcements covering areas such as semiconductor manufacturing, design, advanced packaging, artificial intelligence, research and development, logistics and skill development.
Government Support
Government initiatives, including Production Linked Incentive schemes and the India Semiconductor Mission, are supporting the development of domestic semiconductor and electronics manufacturing capabilities.
Under the Semicon India programme, 12 semiconductor projects have been approved, while five commercial semiconductor units had become operational by September 2026.
The developments point to a broader shift in India’s semiconductor strategy, with greater emphasis on connecting different industries, technologies and institutions to build a stronger domestic electronics and semiconductor ecosystem.
