Ganga Expressway Extension Gets ₹10,761 Crore Clearance, Expanding UP’s Strategic Road Network
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the extension of the Ganga Expressway to Haridwar at an estimated cost of ₹10,761 crore, marking a major expansion of the state’s access-controlled expressway network. The proposed greenfield corridor will be developed as a six-lane expressway with provision for future expansion to eight lanes. Following the Cabinet approval, the project will move towards detailed project report preparation and other implementation formalities.
The extension is designed to strengthen connectivity between Bijnor and Haridwar while creating a high-speed road link connecting Prayagraj and Haridwar, two major cities associated with the Kumbh tradition. The corridor will also strengthen access from western Uttar Pradesh towards the wider Ganga-region economic and tourism network.
From a governance and infrastructure perspective, the project extends the economic utility of the existing Ganga Expressway beyond its Meerut–Prayagraj corridor. Improved access-controlled connectivity can reduce travel friction, facilitate movement of goods and passengers, and improve road access for businesses operating across western Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Uttarakhand.
The project also carries significance for religious and cultural tourism, particularly by improving road connectivity between major pilgrimage destinations. Better transport infrastructure can support tourism-linked commerce, hospitality, logistics and local economic activity along the corridor.
The ₹10,761-crore investment therefore represents more than an additional road stretch: it strengthens inter-state connectivity, regional economic integration and long-term infrastructure capacity, while reinforcing Uttar Pradesh’s broader strategy of building an interconnected high-speed expressway network.
