GRSE Clears ₹2,896 Crore Greenfield Shipyard at Raichak, Expanding India’s Shipbuilding Capacity
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has approved a capital budgetary outlay of ₹2,896 crore for establishing a greenfield shipyard at Raichak in West Bengal, marking a significant capacity-expansion decision for the state-owned shipbuilder. The approval was taken at GRSE’s 423rd Board meeting on September 21, 2026 and disclosed under SEBI’s listing regulations.
The proposed facility is intended to strengthen GRSE’s shipbuilding capabilities across both the naval and commercial segments. The project forms part of a broader capacity-expansion programme announced by the company in August, involving new facilities to augment its manufacturing and shipbuilding infrastructure.
The Raichak investment assumes wider significance as India seeks to strengthen domestic shipbuilding capabilities, reduce capacity constraints and build greater industrial depth in strategic manufacturing. GRSE’s official corporate objectives include establishing greenfield shipyards outside its existing Kolkata premises to support long-term growth and overcome infrastructure limitations.
GRSE was accorded Navratna status in June 2026, reflecting its financial and operational performance and providing greater investment flexibility to expand its business. The company reported revenue from operations of ₹7,002 crore and profit after tax of ₹748 crore in FY2025-26, according to its official disclosures.
The Raichak project therefore represents more than a capacity addition: it strengthens the industrial infrastructure required for future naval and commercial vessel production while supporting India’s broader shipbuilding and manufacturing ecosystem.
