India has set ambitious targets for expanding non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation as part of its long-term climate and energy strategy. While solar and wind capacity continue to form the backbone of renewable expansion, policymakers are now focusing on ensuring that intermittent renewable power can be integrated efficiently into the national grid.

A key priority is the development of battery energy storage systems and pumped-storage projects, which can help balance fluctuations in solar and wind generation. Strengthening transmission networks is also essential to evacuate renewable electricity from resource-rich regions to major consumption centres.

The renewable energy ecosystem is simultaneously becoming an important pillar of industrial policy. Government initiatives aimed at strengthening domestic solar manufacturing, battery production, green hydrogen and related supply chains seek to reduce import dependence while creating investment and employment opportunities.

Another important dimension is the transition towards round-the-clock and firm renewable power. This requires combining renewable generation with storage and complementary power sources to provide greater reliability to consumers and industries.

From a governance perspective, India’s renewable-energy strategy is therefore evolving from a capacity-expansion model to a broader energy-system transformation framework. The focus is increasingly on affordability, reliability, energy security, domestic manufacturing and environmental sustainability.

The next phase of India’s renewable race will consequently be measured not only by how many megawatts are added, but by how effectively clean energy is stored, transmitted and delivered to citizens and businesses.
