IAF Dronathon 2026: Strengthening Indigenous Drone and Counter-Drone Capabilities
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to organise Dronathon-2026 at the Pokhran Range in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, from September 14 to 16, 2026, with a focus on strengthening India’s indigenous capabilities in unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and counter-unmanned aerial systems (CUAS). The initiative is aimed at providing domestic defence manufacturers, start-ups, innovators and technology developers with a platform to demonstrate emerging solutions.
The three-day programme will combine static displays and live operational demonstrations, enabling defence stakeholders to assess the practical capabilities and operational relevance of emerging drone technologies. Key areas of focus are expected to include surveillance and reconnaissance, autonomous operations, swarm-based technologies, electronic warfare and counter-drone systems.
From a governance and defence modernisation perspective, Dronathon-2026 reflects the government’s emphasis on Atmanirbhar Bharat and greater participation of India’s domestic defence industry. By bringing together the armed forces, established manufacturers, start-ups and innovators, the initiative can facilitate technology exchange, operational feedback and identification of promising indigenous solutions.
The growing role of unmanned platforms in contemporary security environments has also increased the importance of effective counter-drone capabilities. The event will therefore provide an institutional framework for evaluating technological solutions under operationally relevant conditions and understanding their potential contribution to future defence preparedness.
Dronathon-2026 also reinforces the IAF’s broader focus on innovation, self-reliance and future-ready capability development.
