India Advances Port-Led Green Shipping with First E-Methanol Production Facility

EnergyPSU Watch

India is set to strengthen its green maritime infrastructure with the development of the country’s first port-based e-methanol production facility, aimed at producing and supplying low-carbon fuel for ships. The initiative marks a strategic shift towards cleaner marine fuels while integrating renewable energy, green hydrogen and port infrastructure into India’s emerging green shipping ecosystem.

The facility is designed to produce e-methanol by combining green hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide. As a lower-carbon alternative to conventional marine fuels, e-methanol can support the decarbonisation of shipping and help vessels reduce their dependence on fossil-based fuels. Locating production facilities near ports can also streamline fuel storage, handling and bunkering operations.

From a governance perspective, the project aligns with India’s broader maritime decarbonisation agenda, which seeks to expand the use of alternative fuels and build green-fuel supply chains at major ports. Port-based production can create an integrated ecosystem connecting renewable power, hydrogen generation, carbon utilisation, fuel production and maritime logistics.

The initiative also has industrial and economic implications. Development of an e-methanol supply chain could encourage investment in green hydrogen, renewable energy, carbon capture and associated port infrastructure while creating opportunities for domestic technology and engineering companies.

For the shipping sector, reliable access to alternative marine fuels is critical to meeting evolving global environmental requirements. The project therefore represents an important step towards establishing India as a hub for green maritime fuel production and supporting the long-term transition of its ports and shipping industry towards cleaner, more sustainable operations.
