Health Ministry Reviews Progress Towards India’s Malaria Elimination Target by 2030

Governance & Public PolicyPolicy Analysis

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reviewed the progress made towards achieving India’s ambitious goal of malaria elimination by 2030. The review focused on strengthening existing public health interventions, improving surveillance mechanisms and ensuring timely diagnosis and effective treatment of malaria cases across the country.

During the review, emphasis was placed on the need for sustained efforts in malaria-endemic and vulnerable regions. Strengthening disease surveillance at the grassroots level was identified as a key priority to ensure early detection, prompt reporting and timely public health response. States and Union Territories were encouraged to maintain close monitoring of malaria trends and strengthen coordination between health authorities at different levels.

The Ministry also highlighted the importance of ensuring adequate availability of diagnostic facilities and essential medicines, particularly in remote and high-risk areas. Strengthening primary healthcare institutions and community-level health services can play an important role in improving access to malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Vector control measures, including interventions aimed at reducing mosquito breeding and transmission, remain an important component of the national malaria elimination strategy. The government also stressed the significance of community participation and public awareness in promoting preventive practices and encouraging people to seek timely medical attention.

The review underlined the importance of evidence-based planning, data-driven decision-making and inter-sectoral coordination for achieving the 2030 elimination target. Continuous monitoring of programme implementation, capacity building of frontline health workers and effective utilisation of available resources were also recognised as essential for sustaining progress.

The Union Health Ministry reiterated its commitment to strengthening malaria control and elimination efforts through coordinated action between the Centre, States and Union Territories. The continued focus on surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and community engagement is expected to support India’s long-term objective of eliminating malaria as a public health challenge by 2030.
