From Hardship to Asian Games Glory: Ajay Thakur’s Kabaddi JourneyFrom Struggle to Sporting Excellence: Ajay Thakur’s Journey to Two Asian Games Gold Medals
Indian kabaddi’s growth has been shaped not only by international victories but also by athletes who rose through difficult circumstances to represent the country at the highest level. Former India captain Ajay Thakur is one such example with his career reflecting the role of determination, sporting opportunity and institutional support in developing elite athletes.
Hailing from Dhabota village in Himachal Pradesh’s Nalagarh region, Thakur emerged from a modest background and built his career through kabaddi. His journey eventually took him to the international stage where he became part of India’s gold-medal-winning teams at the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games. His two Asian Games gold medals became defining milestones of his career.
Thakur also played a significant role in India’s 2016 Kabaddi World Cup triumph, where he was recognised as the tournament’s top raider after scoring 68 points. His international record included further success at the Asian Kabaddi Championship and Asian Indoor Games.
Beyond medals, his story highlights the transformation of kabaddi from a largely grassroots sport into a professionally organised discipline. The expansion of competitive platforms and sports-related employment opportunities has created stronger pathways for athletes from rural and small-town India.
Thakur later joined the Himachal Pradesh Police as a Deputy Superintendent of Police, adding another dimension to a sporting career built from humble beginnings. He announced his retirement from international kabaddi in December 2024.
His journey demonstrates how access to competition, coaching, institutional opportunities and national-level platforms can help grassroots sporting talent progress to the international arena.
