Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Wins UMI 2026 Award for Best Passenger Services
The Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System has received the Award of Excellence for Best Passenger Services and Satisfaction at the 19th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Expo 2026, held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The award recognises the corridor’s contribution to faster regional travel, passenger convenience and modern public transport. Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal presented the award to National Capital Region Transport Corporation Managing Director Shalabh Goel.
NCRTC also secured first prize in the Best Exhibitor category for the second consecutive year. Its exhibition highlighted the development of the Delhi–Meerut corridor, advanced rail technology, multimodal integration and Transit-Oriented Development which promotes planned residential and commercial development around transport hubs.
Passenger Growth and Operational Performance
The approximately 82-km Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut corridor has recorded more than 4.8 crore passenger journeys since services began in October 2023 with daily ridership exceeding 1.1 lakh passengers. Its highest single-day ridership has crossed 1.68 lakh passengers. Operating at speeds of up to 160 kmph, the corridor is designed to reduce intercity travel time, improve commuting convenience and strengthen access to employment, education and commercial centres.
Governance and Economic Impact
The recognition highlights the importance of reliable, passenger-focused public transport in India’s urban infrastructure strategy. Integration with metro services, Indian Railways, interstate bus terminals and city buses can improve first- and last-mile connectivity while reducing dependence on private vehicles. Improved regional accessibility can also support business activity, employment mobility and economic development around stations.
The corridor’s integration with Meerut Metro further demonstrates how regional and urban transport networks can operate together to improve connectivity. Its passenger-service standards offer a benchmark for future Regional Rapid Transit System projects, where punctuality, passenger satisfaction and seamless interchange are as important as infrastructure expansion.
Policy Significance
The UMI 2026 recognition reinforces the role of integrated transport planning in developing connected and economically productive urban regions. For Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region, the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor represents a significant step towards faster regional commuting, improved accessibility and transit-oriented development. Its long-term impact will depend on sustained service quality, effective feeder connectivity and the integration of transport infrastructure with planned urban growth.
