India Achieves 11 Crore Farmer IDs Target Five Months Ahead of Schedule

Digital GovernanceGovernance

The Central Government has achieved its target of creating 11 crore Farmer IDs under the Digital Agriculture Mission, nearly five months ahead of the scheduled deadline. Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the milestone, describing it as a significant step towards digital transformation in Indian agriculture.

Target Achieved Ahead of March 2027 Deadline

According to the Agriculture Ministry, 11 crore Farmer IDs had been generated across the country by the night of October 23, 2026. The government had originally set March 31, 2027, as the deadline for achieving this target.

The milestone was accomplished through coordinated efforts involving the Central Government, state governments, Union Territories and officials working at the grassroots level.

Easier Access to Government Schemes and Financial Services

The Farmer ID serves as a unique digital identity for farmers, designed to simplify access to agricultural services and government welfare schemes.

According to the government, the system is expected to reduce repetitive documentation and make several processes more efficient, including:

  • Bank loans and Kisan Credit Card (KCC) applications
  • Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana benefits
  • Crop insurance claims and disaster relief assistance
  • Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement
  • Verification of eligibility for agricultural welfare schemes

The initiative also aims to improve transparency, reduce duplication and strengthen the delivery of benefits to eligible farmers.

Over 6 Crore Farmers Have Already Benefited

The Agriculture Ministry stated that more than 6 crore farmers have already received benefits under various government schemes through Farmer ID-based service delivery systems.

The Digital Agriculture Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet on September 2, 2024, focuses on developing Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for agriculture.

By connecting verified farmer records with government services, the initiative seeks to improve administrative coordination, accelerate benefit delivery and strengthen agricultural policy implementation.

Efforts to Include Tenant Farmers and Actual Cultivators

The government is also working with states and Union Territories to include eligible tenant farmers, sharecroppers and actual cultivators within the digital framework, subject to applicable rules.

The objective is to ensure that eligible farmers are not excluded from government assistance because of documentation or landholding-related challenges.

Digital Technology to Strengthen Indian Agriculture

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan credited the achievement to cooperation between central and state authorities.

He emphasized that digital technology would play an important role in improving agricultural services, strengthening transparency and supporting farmers’ economic development.

The government plans to further expand and strengthen the Farmer Registry to improve access to agricultural schemes and services nationwide.

The completion of 11 crore Farmer IDs marks an important milestone in India’s efforts to modernize agricultural administration and establish a more accessible, technology-driven support system for farmers.
