Kasari-Masari to Krishnapuri: Yogi Government Plans 602 Houses for Poor in Prayagraj
Uttar Pradesh Government Links Housing Initiative with Action Against Illegal Encroachment
The Uttar Pradesh government has proposed renaming the Kasari-Masari area of Prayagraj as Krishnapuri, marking an attempt to change the locality’s public image. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath performed the bhoomi pujan for the construction of 602 houses in the area. He also distributed keys to beneficiaries of 556 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).
Land Linked to Atiq Ahmed to Be Used for Public Welfare
Kasari-Masari has long been associated with former mafia figure Atiq Ahmed and his influence in Prayagraj. The proposed transformation involves land that authorities have linked to alleged illegal occupation. The housing initiative aims to put the land to public use and provide affordable homes to eligible families.
The government’s approach combines action against alleged illegal encroachments with welfare measures for economically weaker sections. The initiative also seeks to establish a new identity for an area historically associated with criminal influence.
Earlier Housing Projects in Prayagraj and Lucknow
The proposed development follows a similar initiative in Prayagraj’s Lukerganj area, where land associated with Atiq Ahmed’s alleged illegal occupation was reclaimed and used to construct flats under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
In Lucknow, the government has also taken steps involving land linked to former mafia figure Mukhtar Ansari, with housing for disadvantaged sections planned on the site.
These projects reflect the state government’s stated objective of reclaiming land through legal processes and using it for public welfare.
Renaming Krishnapuri: A Symbolic Change in Identity
The proposed renaming is also part of a broader pattern of place-name changes under the Yogi Adityanath government. Earlier examples include Allahabad being renamed Prayagraj, Faizabad district becoming Ayodhya district, and Mughalsarai railway station being renamed after Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
The government has presented such changes as efforts to restore cultural and historical identity. However, critics argue that renaming places cannot, by itself, address wider developmental challenges.
Housing, Security and Public Services Will Determine Success
The transformation of Kasari-Masari into Krishnapuri is both an administrative initiative and a political statement. While the proposed name change seeks to reshape the locality’s image, the housing project offers a potential direct benefit to families in need.
The long-term impact will depend on the timely completion of the houses, the selection of eligible beneficiaries, transparent implementation and access to essential services. Ultimately, the success of the initiative will be measured not simply by a change of name, but by improvements in housing, security and the everyday lives of residents.
