₹3,000 Crore Narcotics Haul: Coast Guard Intercepts Iranian Dhow, Detains Five Pakistani Nationals
The Indian Coast Guard in a joint operation with the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has intercepted an Iranian dhow in the Arabian Sea and seized approximately 526 kg of narcotic substances valued at more than ₹3,000 crore in the international market. Five Pakistani nationals aboard the vessel were detained for questioning and further investigation.
The operation was conducted west of Lakshadweep following intelligence-led maritime surveillance. According to reports the seized consignment included heroin and methamphetamine. The intercepted vessel its crew and the seized contraband were brought to Mumbai under security for coordinated investigation and legal proceedings.
The seizure underscores the growing importance of maritime intelligence, sea-air surveillance and inter-agency coordination in disrupting narcotics trafficking routes operating across the Arabian Sea. The involvement of an Iranian vessel and Pakistani nationals also highlights the transnational nature of maritime smuggling networks, although the responsibility of the detained individuals and the wider network will be established through investigation and due process.
Governance & Security Impact
The operation represents a significant enforcement action against illicit maritime trafficking and demonstrates the role of coordinated intelligence-sharing between central maritime agencies and state-level security units. Beyond the immediate seizure such interceptions can help investigators trace the supply chain, identify financial networks and determine the intended destination of illegal consignments. Further interrogation and multi-agency investigation will be critical in establishing the origin, intended route and broader network connected with the seized narcotics.
