MNRE Expands Support for Industrial Solar Thermal Demonstration Projects
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has introduced a financial support framework to accelerate the adoption of solar thermal technologies in India’s industrial sector. Under the initiative, eligible pilot projects can receive capital expenditure support of up to 50%, aimed at reducing the initial investment burden associated with deploying innovative clean-energy solutions.
The programme seeks to promote the use of solar thermal systems for industrial applications that require heat, including processes in sectors such as food processing, textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and other manufacturing activities. By supporting demonstration-scale projects, the government aims to encourage industries to evaluate the technical and economic viability of solar-based heat solutions.
The capital support is expected to strengthen industry participation in renewable-energy pilots while creating opportunities for technology developers, system integrators and research institutions. Demonstration projects can also generate operational data that may help industries assess scalability, efficiency and long-term cost benefits.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy of reducing dependence on conventional fuels and increasing the share of renewable energy across economic activities. Unlike conventional solar power applications focused primarily on electricity generation, solar thermal technologies can directly supply heat for industrial processes, offering another pathway for decarbonisation.
The MNRE support is therefore positioned as a catalyst for technology adoption, domestic innovation and cleaner industrial growth. Successful pilots could facilitate wider commercial deployment and help build a stronger ecosystem for renewable heat solutions.
