Government Waives Fees on UPI Transactions Up to ₹2,000 and RuPay Debit Card Payments

Banking & FinancialPSU Watch

The Government has introduced measures to reduce the cost of small-value digital transactions and encourage wider adoption of cashless payment systems across the country. Under the latest policy framework, fees on UPI transactions up to ₹2,000 and RuPay debit card payments have been waived, providing greater ease to consumers, merchants and small businesses.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening India’s digital payments ecosystem while ensuring that low-value transactions remain affordable and accessible. By removing transaction-related charges on eligible payments, the government seeks to support greater participation among small merchants, street vendors, local businesses and consumers who increasingly rely on digital modes for everyday purchases.

The policy also reinforces the role of UPI as a key pillar of India’s digital public infrastructure. Its widespread use has enabled faster, convenient and interoperable payments across urban as well as rural markets. The continued promotion of RuPay debit cards further supports the development of a domestically anchored payment network.

The government’s approach focuses on combining digital inclusion, financial accessibility and payment affordability. The removal of applicable charges is expected to lower barriers for merchants and encourage customers to prefer electronic payments for small-ticket transactions.

The move is also aligned with India’s broader objective of expanding cashless commerce, strengthening digital financial infrastructure and promoting technology-led public services. Greater adoption of UPI and RuPay can contribute to improved transaction transparency and support formalisation of economic activity.

Overall, the fee waiver represents a policy push to make digital payments more economical while deepening India’s digital economy. By prioritising accessible payment infrastructure and encouraging wider participation, the initiative seeks to strengthen the foundation of a more inclusive, efficient and digitally connected financial ecosystem.
