India–Canada Cooperation on Easing Cross-Border Remittances

Banking & FinancialPSU Watch

India and Canada are working to facilitate faster, easier and more efficient cross-border remittances and digital payments, marking an important step in strengthening bilateral economic and financial cooperation. The issue was discussed during the inaugural India–Canada Finance Ministers’ Economic and Financial Dialogue held in Toronto, involving Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

The initiative is expected to particularly benefit the more than four lakh Indian students in Canada, as well as their families in India. Both sides are exploring the use of digital technologies and closer cooperation among financial institutions to make payments more convenient and cost-effective.

Finance Minister Sitharaman highlighted India’s experience with digital payment systems and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), emphasising the potential of technology to expand access to efficient payment mechanisms. The two countries are also considering multiple digital payment options that can improve convenience for citizens and strengthen financial connectivity.

The cooperation forms part of a broader effort to modernise the financial relationship between India and Canada. The two countries have identified payments modernisation, fintech innovation, financial stability, capital markets and cross-border merchant payments as important areas for collaboration. They have also agreed to facilitate engagement between relevant authorities and stakeholders on remittances and merchant payment.

A further area of focus is expanding the use of UPI in Canada through partnerships with payment service providers. Such integration could contribute to faster and more cost-effective payments while supporting bilateral trade, tourism, education and small businesses.

Governance Significance

The initiative reflects a broader shift towards digital financial integration, accessible payment infrastructure and citizen-centric financial services. Improved remittance channels can reduce transaction-related barriers, strengthen financial connectivity between the two countries and support families, students, businesses and other stakeholders engaged in India–Canada economic relations.

Overall, India–Canada cooperation on cross-border remittances represents an important component of the renewed bilateral economic partnership, with technology and financial-sector collaboration emerging as key instruments for facilitating smoother international payments.
