Uttar Pradesh Government Expands Women-Centric Welfare and Mobility Initiatives

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a series of women-focused initiatives aimed at strengthening mobility, educational opportunities, economic participation and social empowerment across the state. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that 50,000 female undergraduate students will be provided scooters during October-November, with the initiative intended to support safer and more convenient access to higher education.

The Chief Minister also launched the ‘Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrushakti Yatra’ scheme, under which women aged 60 years and above will be able to travel free of cost in Uttar Pradesh Transport Corporation buses. The initiative is positioned as a measure to promote mobility, dignity and greater participation of elderly women in public life.

Highlighting the changing role of women in the state’s socio-economic landscape, the Chief Minister said women are progressing from household responsibilities towards financial independence, entrepreneurship and technology. He emphasised that women’s participation in economic and development activities must continue to expand.

The Chief Minister also criticised the governance environment before 2017, alleging that commission-based practices affected the implementation of government schemes. He said the present administration has focused on transparency, accountability and direct delivery of welfare benefits.

Emphasising women’s security and empowerment, the Chief Minister said that before 2017 many daughters were hesitant to aspire for their goals. The government, he stated, is committed to creating an environment in which women can participate more substantially in education, employment, entrepreneurship and public life.

The initiatives reflect the state government’s broader focus on women-led development, educational mobility, social security and economic empowerment, with the objective of increasing women’s participation in Uttar Pradesh’s growth and governance ecosystem
