Government Expands Transshipment Air Cargo Network
The Government of India is expanding the country’s transshipment air cargo network to strengthen logistics infrastructure, improve cargo connectivity and enhance India’s position as a global aviation and trade hub.
The initiative is aimed at facilitating the faster movement of international cargo through Indian airports by improving transshipment facilities, operational efficiency and connectivity. A stronger air cargo network is expected to support exporters and importers by reducing logistics bottlenecks and improving the reliability of supply chains.
The expansion also aligns with the government’s broader focus on strengthening multimodal logistics and creating an efficient, technology-enabled transportation ecosystem. Improved air cargo infrastructure can facilitate the movement of high-value, time-sensitive and specialised goods while supporting sectors such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, engineering products, perishables and e-commerce.
By increasing transshipment capacity and strengthening international cargo linkages, the government seeks to improve India’s competitiveness in global trade. The move can also encourage greater utilisation of Indian airports for international cargo operations and contribute to the development of regional logistics hubs.
