100 Days of BJP Government in West Bengal: Balancing Trust and Mistrust

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal has completed its first 100 days in office, marking a significant political transition after a long period of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule. The new administration, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, is using the initial period to project a governance model focused on administrative reform, welfare delivery, employment, healthcare, investment and security.

A key feature of the government’s first 100 days has been its emphasis on presenting a performance-based governance agenda. The BJP has prepared a 41-page report card and launched a statewide outreach programme aimed at taking its assessment of the government’s work directly to citizens and seeking public feedback. The exercise is expected to cover around four crore voters, indicating an effort to connect administrative performance with public expectations.

Healthcare, employment, women’s welfare, border security and cooperation with the Centre have emerged as important areas of focus. The government has also sought to align state-level initiatives with central welfare programmes and strengthen administrative coordination. These measures are intended to improve service delivery and create greater opportunities for citizens.

However, the first 100 days have also been accompanied by political scrutiny and public debate. A change in government on this scale naturally creates expectations about transparency, institutional accountability and delivery of promised schemes. The administration’s challenge will be to convert electoral confidence into sustained public trust through measurable outcomes rather than political messaging alone.

The balance between trust and mistrust will therefore remain central to the government’s governance journey. Public confidence is likely to depend on how effectively the administration addresses employment, healthcare, infrastructure, law and order, welfare delivery and investment while ensuring that governance remains inclusive and accountable.

As the BJP government moves beyond its first 100 days, the focus will increasingly shift from announcing priorities to demonstrating results. For West Bengal, the coming period will be an important test of whether the new political mandate can translate into responsive administration, stronger public institutions and broad-based development.
