“अष्टौ गुणाः पुरुषं दीपयन्ति प्रज्ञा सुशीलत्वदमौ श्रुतं च।
पराक्रमश्च बहुभाषिता च दानं यथाशक्ति कृतज्ञता च।।”
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam highlighting eight essential qualities that contribute to the development of an individual’s character, wisdom and social responsibility.
The Sanskrit verse underlines wisdom, good conduct, self-control, knowledge, courage, effective communication, generosity and gratitude as key virtues that illuminate a person’s life and contribute to responsible citizenship.
Elaborating on the message the Prime Minister noted that wisdom enables an individual to follow the right path, while good conduct strengthens moral character. Self-control promotes discipline and responsible behaviour, and knowledge enhances understanding and informed decision-making.
The Subhashitam also emphasises courage as an important quality for facing difficult circumstances with determination. Effective and skilful communication helps an individual earn respect and facilitates constructive engagement within society. The virtues of giving according to one’s capacity and expressing gratitude further strengthen social responsibility and human values.
The message reflects the broader importance of ethical leadership, responsible citizenship, value-based education and character development in strengthening a socially conscious society. By drawing attention to these timeless principles, the Prime Minister has underscored the relevance of India’s traditional knowledge systems in contemporary public life.
The emphasis on values such as discipline, knowledge, courage, compassion and gratitude also aligns with the objective of fostering individuals who can contribute positively to inclusive development, social harmony and good governance.
