Indian Culture Portal 2.0 Strengthens Digital Access to India’s Cultural Heritage
The Ministry of Culture has taken a significant step towards strengthening digital access, preservation and public engagement with India’s rich cultural heritage through the upgraded Indian Culture Portal (ICP) Version 2.0 launched in March 2026.
Developed with a modern, scalable and secure digital architecture, the upgraded portal aims to provide a unified platform for accessing cultural resources available across museums, libraries, archives, monuments and other cultural institutions. The initiative reflects the government’s focus on digital governance, technology-enabled cultural preservation and citizen-centric public services.
A key feature of ICP 2.0 is its integration with the Bhashini platform, enabling access to cultural content in 22 Indian languages. The introduction of the AI-powered chatbot ‘Bharti’ further strengthens digital engagement by supporting smart search, content discovery and multilingual interaction.
The portal incorporates advanced search and filtering mechanisms, curated thematic collections and an improved responsive user interface to facilitate easier navigation. Its development as a Progressive Web Application (PWA) ensures accessibility across desktops, laptops, tablets and mobile devices.
From a technology and governance perspective, the adoption of a decoupled architecture based on React and Drupal 10 is aimed at improving performance, scalability and cybersecurity. Standardised metadata exchange, APIs and institutional onboarding mechanisms have also been established to facilitate integration with cultural institutions.
The portal is designed to support students, researchers, educators and citizens by providing access to verified cultural information and digitised collections. It also enables virtual exploration of museums, manuscripts, artefacts and heritage resources.
The initiative further promotes Jan Bhagidari (public participation) by introducing thematic sections and curated cultural collections, while strengthening the long-term digital preservation of India’s tangible and intangible heritage.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the upgraded portal represents an important step towards building an inclusive, multilingual and technology-driven digital cultural ecosystem, making India’s cultural knowledge more accessible to citizens in the country and audiences worldwide.
