Trump-Xi Summit in Washington: Key Issues on the Agenda

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington for a high-stakes three-day state visit beginning September 23, 2026. The meeting comes at a time when relations between the United States and China remain strained over trade, Taiwan, technology and the war involving Iran.

The summit is expected to focus on several major issues, with trade and tariffs likely to be among the most important. Both sides are looking to manage their economic tensions and explore ways to stabilise bilateral trade relations.

Artificial intelligence is another key area of discussion. The two countries are expected to address AI-related risks, technology competition and possible mechanisms for dialogue between Washington and Beijing.

The sensitive issue of Taiwan is also expected to feature prominently. Beijing has long opposed U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, while Washington maintains its policy of supporting Taiwan’s ability to defend itself. The issue remains one of the biggest sources of tension between the two countries.

The Iran conflict and the wider Middle East situation could also come up during the talks. China’s relationship with Iran and its role in the region could be discussed as Washington seeks to address the broader security situation.

Other areas could include critical minerals, technology restrictions and broader economic cooperation.

Xi’s visit also includes a formal state programme, including a White House state dinner on September 24.
