EV Infrastructure Push: Uttar Pradesh Sets 1,500-Location Target Under PM E-DRIVE Phase-II

Uttar Pradesh has set a target to identify 1,500 locations for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations under the second phase of the PM E-DRIVE scheme, signalling a wider state-level push to build the infrastructure required for electric mobility. The target was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary S.P. Goyal.

The state’s immediate focus is on converting identified locations into operational charging infrastructure. Officials informed the meeting that 99 MoUs have already been signed against 238 identified sites under the existing rollout. The Chief Secretary directed officials to accelerate the process for the remaining sites.

For Phase-II, district magistrates have been tasked with identifying suitable locations and forwarding proposals to the concerned department. The proposed network is expected to cover a wider range of public-use locations strengthening charging accessibility beyond major urban centres.

Governance & Infrastructure Impact
The 1,500-location target places district-level site identification and implementation at the centre of Uttar Pradesh’s EV infrastructure strategy. A broader charging network can support the expansion of electric cars, two-wheelers, commercial fleets and other electric mobility applications by improving access to public charging facilities.

The move also has implications for urban mobility, clean transportation and investment in EV-related infrastructure. Strategically distributed charging points can help address one of the key infrastructure requirements for wider EV adoption while creating opportunities for charging operators and allied businesses.

However, the effectiveness of the programme will ultimately depend on the speed of site approvals, power connectivity, installation and commissioning. The transition from identified locations and MoUs to reliable, operational charging stations will therefore remain the critical implementation benchmark.
For Uttar Pradesh, the Phase-II target represents a shift towards district-level execution of EV infrastructure, aligning mobility planning with the state’s broader infrastructure and clean-technology agenda.
