NTPC Opens Co-Generation Projects to Industrial Investors, Seeks 26% Equity Participation
State-owned power major NTPC Limited has invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) from commercial and industrial (C&I) entities willing to invest a 26% equity stake in proposed co-generation projects, signalling a push towards industry-linked energy infrastructure and long-term power supply partnerships.
The initiative aims to develop facilities that simultaneously generate electricity and useful thermal energy, including steam, to meet the operational requirements of industrial consumers. NTPC is also exploring integrated energy supply solutions combining coal-based generation, renewable energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), according to the company’s announcement.
Under the co-generation model, electricity and thermal energy are produced through an integrated system, potentially improving overall energy utilisation compared with separate generation arrangements. The proposed framework is intended to address industrial requirements for reliable energy, cost optimisation and greater operational efficiency through long-term supply arrangements.
The EoI invites industrial and commercial participants to share equity in these projects, creating a partnership model between NTPC and energy-intensive businesses. Such participation could help align power infrastructure development with the specific energy demands of manufacturing and other industrial operations.
Governance and Economic Impact
The initiative reflects a broader shift towards collaborative infrastructure development, in which public-sector energy expertise is combined with private industrial participation. For businesses, integrated electricity and steam supplies could improve energy planning and reduce exposure to disruptions, subject to project-specific costs and contractual terms.
For NTPC, the approach offers an opportunity to expand beyond conventional electricity generation and develop customised energy solutions for industrial customers. The inclusion of renewable energy and battery storage also creates scope to integrate cleaner power sources into industrial supply arrangements.
According to NTPC’s official tender portal, the EoI was issued on October 11, 2026, with submissions scheduled to close on November 30, 2026. The initiative’s eventual impact will depend on investor participation, project economics and the implementation of long-term supply agreements.
