Jaishankar-Ethiopia Talks Target Trade, Investment and Strategic Security Cooperation

NewsWorld

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held wide-ranging discussions with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos Hessebon in Addis Ababa on October 9, 2026, to strengthen India-Ethiopia strategic ties, with trade, investment, infrastructure, technology and security emerging as key areas of cooperation.

The meeting formed part of Jaishankar’s three-nation African tour, which also included Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation across traditional economic sectors while exploring opportunities in digitalisation, science, innovation and development partnerships.

According to Jaishankar, the talks covered trade and investment, development projects, infrastructure, maritime affairs, security, technology and cultural exchanges. Both sides also exchanged views on global developments, multilateral engagement and strengthening the India-African Union partnership. Ethiopia’s participation in the recent BRICS Summit hosted by India was also acknowledged during the engagement.

Strategic and Economic Significance

The discussions reflect India’s broader effort to deepen economic and diplomatic engagement with African economies. Ethiopia’s position in the Horn of Africa gives the partnership added relevance for regional connectivity, maritime interests and wider cooperation across the continent.

For Indian businesses, stronger bilateral engagement could create opportunities in infrastructure development, technology, education and investment. Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reforms and its progress towards World Trade Organization membership may also open avenues for greater commercial cooperation. India and Ethiopia signed a bilateral accession protocol supporting Ethiopia’s WTO membership process in May 2026.

Jaishankar’s visit also highlighted emerging areas of collaboration. His engagements in Addis Ababa included visits to the National Palace and Museum, the Ethiopia Science Museum and the country’s AI Institute, underlining the potential for cooperation in heritage, scientific innovation and artificial intelligence.

Governance Perspective: The priority now is to translate diplomatic engagement into measurable outcomes through stronger trade links, investment partnerships, technology cooperation and sustained multilateral coordination. The talks reinforce India’s approach of combining economic diplomacy with strategic engagement to deepen its long-term partnership with Africa.
