Industrial & Mining GovernanceNMDC Advances ₹5,427-Crore Bastar Mineral Processing Complex, Strengthening Integrated Iron Ore Value Chain

EnergyPSU Watch

National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) is advancing a major ₹5,427-crore mineral processing and logistics project in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, comprising an iron ore processing facility, slurry pipeline and pellet plant. The initiative is aimed at strengthening value addition within the iron ore supply chain while improving the efficiency of mineral transportation and downstream processing.

At Bacheli, NMDC has commenced trial operations of a 2.0 million-tonne-per-annum (MTPA) iron ore beneficiation plant. The facility has successfully completed its first hot trial using iron ore fines for slurry production, marking an important step towards integrated beneficiation in the Bailadila region.

The associated slurry pipeline is designed to transport processed iron ore in slurry form towards Nagarnar. NMDC’s broader project architecture includes a 15 MTPA slurry pipeline system, with Phase-I covering the Bacheli–Nagarnar section, alongside the 2 MTPA beneficiation and 2 MTPA pellet facilities.

The infrastructure is expected to reduce dependence on conventional road-based transportation, improve mineral evacuation efficiency and support greater utilisation of lower-grade iron ore fines through beneficiation and pelletisation. NMDC has also progressed the Nagarnar pellet plant, with the indurating machine recently being lit as a key commissioning milestone.

Governance & Economic Impact

The project represents a strategic shift from conventional ore extraction towards an integrated mineral-value chain in Bastar. By connecting beneficiation, slurry transportation and pelletisation. NMDC is strengthening domestic raw-material security for the steel sector while creating scope for improved logistics efficiency and industrial activity in Chhattisgarh. The investment also reinforces Bastar’s role in India’s expanding mining and steel ecosystem.
