Beyond Assembly: ECMS Seeks to Build a Globally Competitive Electronics Component Ecosystem
India is strengthening the foundations of its electronics manufacturing ecosystem through the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), aimed at expanding domestic production of critical components and reducing dependence on imports. The initiative focuses on developing a competitive component ecosystem that can support the country’s rapidly growing electronics industry and strengthen supply-chain resilience.
The scheme is designed to encourage investments in the manufacturing of key electronic components, including display modules, camera modules, printed circuit boards, lithium-ion cells, passive components and other strategic inputs required across consumer electronics, automobiles, telecommunications and emerging technology sectors. By supporting domestic manufacturing capacity, the policy seeks to deepen localisation and create stronger linkages between component suppliers and large electronics manufacturers.
A stronger domestic component ecosystem can generate significant economic benefits. Greater local value addition can improve supply-chain efficiency, reduce exposure to global disruptions and strengthen India’s position as a reliable manufacturing destination. It can also support technology adoption, skill development and the creation of new employment opportunities across manufacturing and allied industries.
The ECMS also aligns with India’s broader industrial policy objective of moving beyond final-product assembly towards higher-value manufacturing. A deeper component base can help Indian companies integrate more effectively into global electronics supply chains while creating opportunities for domestic enterprises and international investors.
