IAF Dronathon 2026: Advancing Indigenous Unmanned Technology
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is conducting Dronathon-2026 from September 14 to 16 at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, marking a significant initiative to strengthen India’s indigenous unmanned aerial technology ecosystem. The inaugural event brings together domestic defence manufacturers, start-ups, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and technology innovators.
The three-day programme provides a platform for showcasing and evaluating advanced Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS). Static displays and live demonstrations are being used to assess emerging technologies and their potential contribution to operational preparedness. More than 20 defence companies and innovators are participating in the event.
Dronathon-2026 reflects the growing importance of unmanned systems in modern defence operations and highlights the need for rapid technological adaptation. The initiative also supports the broader national objective of strengthening domestic defence manufacturing, encouraging innovation and reducing dependence on imported technologies.
The event is expected to promote closer collaboration between the armed forces, industry and the innovation ecosystem. By providing an operational platform for indigenous solutions, the IAF seeks to encourage the development of reliable and scalable technologies suited to evolving security requirements.
The initiative reinforces the government’s emphasis on Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence and highlights India’s expanding capabilities in advanced aerospace and unmanned technologies. Dronathon-2026 therefore represents an important step towards building a stronger, innovation-driven and self-reliant defence technology ecosystem.
