Bangladesh Rules Out Participation at BRICS Summit
Bangladesh has decided not to send a representative to the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi, effectively ruling out Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s participation in the high-level international gathering. The decision comes ahead of the summit scheduled for September 12–13, 2026, where India will host leaders and representatives to deliberate on major global and economic issues.
Earlier, India had extended an invitation to Tarique Rahman to participate in a BRICS outreach session in his capacity as Chair of BIMSTEC. However, Dhaka has now clarified that Rahman will not travel to India for the summit. Reports also indicate that Bangladesh has placed greater emphasis on strengthening bilateral engagement with India, particularly through ongoing discussions on trade and economic cooperation.
The development assumes significance against the backdrop of evolving India-Bangladesh relations. Both countries have been engaged in discussions on trade and other bilateral matters, while diplomatic engagement remains an important component of regional stability and economic connectivity.
From a governance perspective, Bangladesh’s decision reflects a preference for direct bilateral dialogue at the present stage rather than participation in the BRICS multilateral outreach process. The move also highlights the importance of diplomatic coordination among neighbouring countries in addressing issues related to commerce, regional cooperation and strategic interests.
The BRICS Summit is expected to provide a platform for discussions on global economic challenges, trade, development and international cooperation. India’s hosting of the summit further underlines New Delhi’s role in shaping multilateral economic and diplomatic priorities.
Bangladesh’s absence is therefore being viewed as a notable diplomatic development, while continued India-Bangladesh engagement through bilateral channels could remain significant for future cooperation in trade, connectivity and regional affairs.
