PACT Initiative under e-FAST India: Advancing Zero-Emission Freight in India
The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), under its e-FAST India (Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport–India) initiative, has introduced the PACT (Partnership for Accelerating Clean Transportation) to accelerate the transition towards zero-emission freight transportation in the country.
The initiative seeks to strengthen collaboration among government institutions, industry stakeholders, financial institutions, technology providers and other ecosystem partners to promote the adoption of electric and other clean freight technologies. It focuses on addressing key barriers such as high upfront vehicle costs, charging infrastructure gaps, financing constraints and the need for coordinated policy support.
Under the PACT framework, stakeholders are expected to work towards developing scalable solutions for the deployment of zero-emission trucks and supporting infrastructure. The initiative also aims to facilitate knowledge sharing, investment mobilisation and evidence-based policymaking for sustainable freight mobility.
The freight sector plays a critical role in India’s economic growth and supply-chain efficiency, while also contributing significantly to energy consumption and transport-related emissions. Promoting zero-emission freight can therefore support India’s broader objectives of energy security, cleaner mobility and climate-resilient development.
The PACT initiative represents a collaborative governance approach, bringing together public and private stakeholders to create an enabling ecosystem for clean freight. By supporting innovation, financing and infrastructure development, it can contribute to the gradual decarbonisation of India’s logistics sector and strengthen the country’s transition towards sustainable and low-carbon transportation.
