India’s First Geosynchronous Imaging Satellite EOS-05 Successfully Launched
India achieved a significant milestone in space-based Earth observation with the successful launch of EOS-05, the country’s first dedicated imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit. The satellite was launched aboard the GSLV-F17 from the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, at 2:55 AM on September 4, 2026.
The 2,367-kg Earth observation spacecraft was precisely placed into its intended sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit. GSLV-F17, standing 51.7 metres tall and weighing approximately 420.5 tonnes at lift-off, marked the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle.
EOS-05 is expected to strengthen India’s Earth observation infrastructure by providing real-time imagery from an altitude of around 36,000 km. Its capabilities will support critical public-sector applications, including agriculture, disaster management and broader Earth observation services.
The mission also represents an important step in enhancing India’s indigenous space technology and satellite-based data capabilities. According to ISRO, the successful deployment demonstrates the improved performance of the GSLV platform and expands the country’s capacity to operate advanced Earth observation systems from geosynchronous orbit.
The successful mission reinforces India’s growing capabilities in space-based infrastructure and strengthens the role of satellite technology in supporting governance, disaster preparedness, resource monitoring and national development.
