India-US Strategic Engagement Stays on Track as Modi, Trump Review Bilateral Cooperation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on September 30, reviewing the progress of India-US cooperation across trade, defence, energy and critical technologies. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and agreed to maintain close engagement.
The conversation comes at a significant stage for bilateral economic engagement, with India and the US continuing negotiations on a proposed bilateral trade agreement. Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is in the US from September 29 to October 5 for discussions aimed at advancing the trade negotiations.
Trade and energy remain key pressure points. The discussions are taking place amid differences over US measures connected with countries purchasing Russian energy. India has raised concerns that such measures could have implications for bilateral relations and its energy-security interests.
At the same time, defence cooperation and critical technologies are becoming increasingly important pillars of the relationship. Cooperation in areas such as advanced technologies, energy and strategic sectors gives the partnership a wider economic and security dimension beyond traditional trade ties.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including ongoing efforts to promote global peace and security, and agreed to remain in touch.
Governance Impact: The latest engagement signals that New Delhi and Washington are keeping institutional dialogue active while navigating trade negotiations, energy-security concerns and wider geopolitical issues. For India, sustained engagement provides a channel to address differences while continuing cooperation in strategic and technology-intensive sectors.
