Uttar Pradesh Sees Major Rooftop Solar Push Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme: 8.25 Lakh Homes Now Solar-Powered

Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a significant transformation in household electricity generation with the rapid expansion of rooftop solar power under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

According to the latest figures, solar power systems have so far been installed on the rooftops of 8,24,492 households across the state, taking the total installed rooftop solar capacity to 2,769.59 MW. These systems are collectively generating nearly 1.25 crore units of clean electricity every day, placing Uttar Pradesh among the leading states in India in terms of residential rooftop solar adoption.

Daily Power Generation Worth Nearly ₹8.10 Crore

Based on an average generation of 4.5 units per kilowatt per day, the electricity generated through the installed rooftop systems is estimated to be worth around ₹8.10 crore every day, assuming an electricity value of ₹6.50 per unit.

On an annual basis, this translates into an estimated economic benefit or electricity saving of nearly ₹2,956 crore, providing direct financial relief to household consumers.

Electricity Bills of Over 1.25 Lakh Consumers Reduced to Zero

The impact of the scheme is also visible in household electricity bills.

According to consumer billing data for June 2026, as many as 1,25,262 consumers in Uttar Pradesh recorded zero or negative electricity bills.

A zero bill means that the consumer did not have to make any electricity payment for that month. A negative bill can occur when a rooftop solar consumer supplies more electricity to the grid than the amount drawn from it. The surplus electricity is then credited and adjusted against subsequent bills.

More Than ₹7,300 Crore in Central and State Support

Financial assistance has played a major role in accelerating rooftop solar adoption in the state.

Under the scheme, consumers in Uttar Pradesh have received more than ₹5,400 crore in central financial assistance so far. In addition, the Uttar Pradesh government has provided over ₹1,900 crore in state-level incentives to beneficiaries.

Together, the central and state support exceeds ₹7,300 crore, significantly reducing the upfront cost of installing rooftop solar systems for households.

Solar Capacity Expected to Cut 36.6 Lakh Tonnes of CO₂ Annually

The expansion of rooftop solar is also contributing to Uttar Pradesh’s clean-energy and environmental goals.

The state’s installed rooftop solar capacity of 2,769.59 MW is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 36.6 lakh metric tonnes every year.

This reduction is equivalent to the amount of carbon absorbed annually by around 16.5 crore mature trees, according to the estimates provided.

The rooftop-based model also reduces the requirement for large land parcels. It is estimated that nearly 10,617 acres of land can be kept available for agriculture, residential development and other productive uses instead of being occupied by large ground-mounted solar projects.

More Than 85,000 Employment Opportunities Created

The solar expansion is also generating employment across the state’s renewable-energy ecosystem.

More than 85,000 direct employment opportunities have been created through the scheme with further growth expected as installed capacity increases.

The sector is creating opportunities for engineers, technicians, electricians, surveyors, supervisors, supply and logistics workers and maintenance professionals. It is also opening new avenues for self-employment and small businesses linked to solar installation and servicing.

Uttar Pradesh currently has a network of around 7,750 registered solar vendors, providing services ranging from site surveys and system design to installation, electrical connection, inspection, commissioning and maintenance.

Scheme Deadline Set for March 31, 2027

The implementation period for the PM Surya Ghar scheme is currently set to continue until March 31, 2027.

During this period, applicants need to complete several stages, including application, installation of the solar plant, electrical inspection, net metering and subsidy disbursement.

Officials have therefore advised eligible domestic consumers not to wait until the final months of the scheme, as completing all these processes can take time.

Consumers Urged to Apply Through the National Portal

Domestic electricity consumers interested in installing rooftop solar systems can apply through the PM Surya Ghar national portal or approach a registered vendor associated with their electricity distribution company.

The scheme provides central financial assistance along with additional support from the Uttar Pradesh government, making rooftop solar more affordable for eligible households.

With more than 8.24 lakh homes already equipped with rooftop solar systems, Uttar Pradesh’s solar expansion is increasingly linking clean-energy generation with household savings, employment creation and lower carbon emissions.
