ASEAN–India Agriculture Cooperation: Strengthening Regional Partnership
The 9th ASEAN–India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry and the 10th ASEAN–India Agriculture Working Group Meeting were held in New Delhi, reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in agriculture, forestry and allied sectors.
The meetings provided an important platform for India and ASEAN member states to discuss food security, sustainable agriculture, climate resilience and rural development. The deliberations focused on enhancing collaboration in areas that directly contribute to the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities across the region.
A key priority of the engagement was promoting sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices. With agriculture increasingly affected by climate change, cooperation in resilient farming systems, efficient resource management and innovative technologies can help improve productivity while protecting natural resources.
The meetings also highlighted the importance of agricultural research, digital technologies, capacity building and knowledge exchange. Greater institutional cooperation can support the adoption of modern farming techniques, improve value chains and strengthen market linkages for agricultural producers.
Forestry and sustainable management of natural resources also formed an important part of the discussions. India and ASEAN countries can benefit from sharing best practices related to forest conservation, biodiversity protection and sustainable land management.
The ASEAN–India partnership in agriculture reflects India’s broader Act East Policy and its objective of deepening economic and developmental engagement with Southeast Asia. Strengthened cooperation can contribute to regional food security, sustainable growth and inclusive rural development.
